Smart Multimedia File Objects

چکیده
In this paper, we describe a method, Smart File Objects (SFOs), for optimizing access of remote files across wide-area and wireless networks. The SFO is application-specific middleware designed to address the network bottleneck caused by high latency, low bandwidth networks. The SFO adaptively caches and prefetches data concurrently with application execution. We have applied the SFO concept to an MPEG player accessing remote Internet files. The SFO estimates the playback time using a set of derived cost models for the different components of the MPEG play process, and the communication overhead by timing the retrieval of remote video frames. This information allows the SFO to determine the amount of overlap between download and playback. The results indicate that playtime can be accurately estimated and both overall viewing time and viewing latency can be substantially reduced using this

Interactive segmentation with hidden object-based annotations: toward smart media
In this paper a novel “Smart Media” concept for semantic-based multimedia security and management is proposed. This concept is based on interactive object segmentation (considered as side information in visual human-computer interface) with hidden object-based annotations. Information-theoretic formalism is introduced that considers the human-computer interface as a multiple access channel. We ...
متن کاملPuzzle Piece Topology: Detecting Arrangements in Smart Objects Interfaces
Smart object interfaces enable a computer to respond to a group of users’ manipulations of a physical environment. This unobtrusive interface is especially well suited for providing guidance as students attempt to solve mathematical and scientific puzzles. This paper introduces a formalism for describing arrangements of smart objects on a 2D surface, and suggests a strategy for efficiently repr...
متن کاملOptimizing Remote File Access for Parallel and Distributed Network Applications
This paper presents a paradigm for remote file access called Smart File Objects (SFOs). The SFO is a realization of the ELFS (Extensible File Systems) concept of files as typed objects, but applied to wide-area networks [9]. The SFO is an object-oriented application-specific file access paradigm designed to address the bottleneck imposed by high latency, low bandwidth, unpredictable, and unreli...
متن کاملManaging Multimedia Assets with Federated Join
We describe the architecture of a federated system designed to allow the integration of structured, relational, data together with unstructured multimedia data. Two characteristics of multimedia have special implications for such an architecture. First, multimedia objects can be very large. Second, most good tools for working with multimedia expect these objects to be stored as files within a f...
متن کاملOASIS: Creating Smart Objects with Dynamic Digital Behaviors
INTRODUCTION Our daily environment is full of physical objects that are unaware of and incapable of engaging with the digital world. These everyday physical objects lack the benefits of being digital, such as access to vast stores of information, complex interactive behaviors, and rich multimedia experiences. Although barcodes, RFID tags, and processors are being built into an increasing percen...
